Dear 2020 Moms, Here’s A Doula’s Wish List For you

(I originally wrote this at the end of 2019 & published it on a previous blog… as we grapple with the nobel corona virus, though, I found myself thinking of it again.)

I can hardly believe we are in the 2020's; wasn't 2000 just yesterday?! (or does that make me sound old?). As we roll into the 2020's, I have so many wishes for new moms. There can be a cultural misapprehension about what doulas want for their clients; many assume that we are there to promote "natural" births alone and some even fear that a doula might only be there to promote her agenda. Well, take it from this certified doula, that's not what I'm here for. I am happy to help you work for the goal of an non-medicated birth is that’s what you want, but that’s not my final goal. My goal is always to promote your peace, confidence, and assurance while you navigate your own birthing experience!

If you're having a baby this year (whether it's your first or your fifth), here's my wish list for you!

I wish:

* for a wonderful working relationship with care providers you trust.

* for a support network that lets you make pregnancy decisions in peace, brings hot meals in the postpartum weeks & cool compresses for the days when your milk comes in (or bottle warmers if those are needed!).

* for a smooth transition to parenting a newborn * for an easy breastfeeding relationship if that is in your plans.

* for strength & clarity in your labors, with compassionate support by your side

* for healing and grace during recovery
